Partnership for a Master's Degree in Five Years

The UNM innovation Academy (iA), in partnership with UNM and CNM, provides an unexpected pathway to your graduate degree. With the 2 + 1 + 2 program, you can transition from an associate degree, through a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree, and into a Master of Business Administration in a total of five years.

The program not only offers an expedited path through all three degree programs, but delivers unique and important features to help ease your transitions between degrees.

How It Works

You are admissible to the program after completion of 18 credit hours of CNM coursework with at least a 3.0 GPA. As an applicant, you will be assessed from a simple application and short interviews with program staff. Once admitted, you will need to complete the State of New Mexico General Education Core and any technical requirements for either an AA, AS, or AAS degree from Central New Mexico Community College.

A space in the Bachelor of Liberal Arts program will be reserved for admitted 2 + 1 + 2 students and you will officially apply to the program once you have completed your two-year degree. You will then complete your Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree while simultaneously taking iA courses to earn your iA scholar levels. More information is available at the UNM innovation Academy (iA).

After one year of study at UNM, you can begin your Master of Business Administration coursework which will count toward both a BLA focus area and your MBA requirements (similar to the 3/2 MBA program currently in existence). Upon completion of the undergraduate requirements and up to 18 hours of MBA work, you will graduate with your BLA degree and begin the MBA program full-time for your final year. The MBA will be awarded at the conclusion of the fifth year.

Program Mentors

The core feature of this program is a dedicated advisor to mentor and guide you through all three degree programs. This advisor, housed within the iA, provides the continuity  research suggests is a key contributor to academic success and degree completion.

The program also requires a cohort course, (LAIS 309), where first semester and final semester students come together to complete a large-scale, regionally relevant project. Graduating students serve as mentors to new students, giving you the opportunity to experience both roles during your time in the program.

The program offers an affordable option for you if you have not previously considered graduate-level studies. A graduate of a New Mexico High School on the Lottery Scholarship can complete all three degrees, (including incidental fees), for less than $12,000, far below the average debt of a New Mexico four-year college graduate at $28,000 and significantly lower than the average cost of an AACSB MBA which comes in between $45,000 and $60,000 for the graduate degree alone.

The AACSB MBA is the gold-standard in MBA programs and UNM’s Business School holds this accreditation.
