Session A Summer 2022 will begin May 16, 2022 will be offered online and in-person. We will be offering English as a Second Language (ESL) and GED classes in Spanish.  New students must first attend a virtual orientation via Zoom. See orientation dates below.

Next Steps for New and Returning Students

 After you attend a Zoom orientation, follow these steps to complete your registration:

  1. Fill out the free online application to be a CNM student.
  2. Take the online CASAS placement exam. In order to take the exam, students must have the following:
    • A computer or laptop with preferably Windows 10 or 11 (Please note that Chromebooks do not work for remote CASAS testing)
    • Webcam and microphone
    • High-Speed internet
    • 2 continuous hours for the test (schedule your CASAS ESL or HSE test on the Assessment Center website)
  3. You will be registered for your leveled class by the Adult Basic Education office. At this time, you will receive your schedule at your CNM email address. 
  4. Pay a $10 fee for the class. 

ESL Class Information

We offer leveled classes (Beginning, Low/High Intermediate, and Advanced) as well as multi-level classes.

  • You can choose one leveled class (350, 450, 550, 650) that matches your test score
  • You can select one multi-leveled class

For detailed course descriptions, please see the ESL section of the course catalog. If your CASAS ESL placement test score is 236 or above you can take the CASAS Reading and Math GOALS tests and register for HSE preparation classes, or take the Accuplacer test in the Assessment Center and register for college-level classes for ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages).

Nursing Assistant Program

Central New Mexico Community College offers a certificate program for Adult Basic Education (ABE) students who wish to prepare for working in health care. The program is open to speakers of any language. Instruction is in English. The program is open to qualified Advanced ESL students with test scores 221 (Advanced) or above. Ability to work legally in the U.S. depends on immigration & visa status. Spanish Bilingual Program

If you are interested in CNM's Spanish bilingual program in Early Childhood Multicultural Education, contact Sandra Arpero at or call (505) 224-4000 ext. 53917. The program is open to ESL students with test scores of 181-235.
