Early Childhood Education

Make a difference in the lives of young children with Early Childhood Education.

About the Program

Early childhood advocates have long understood the importance of the care and education of the very youngest members of our society. Research has demonstrated that each dollar devoted to the nurturing of young children equates to fewer dollars spent by the government on things such as remedial education and crime. There are exciting national and state initiatives around early childhood education such as the New Mexico PreK Initiative and the growing attention on early childhood care and education provides for many career opportunities in the field.

New Mexico is a national leader in the professional development of early childhood educators with a career lattice that supports immediate entry into the profession starting with the 45 hour child care training, to a state-wide articulated degree in early childhood that prepares early childhood educators for both private and public school (PreK-3rd grade) settings.

Early childhood education has long been the "heart" of CNM's Education Programs and we are excited to introduce degree pathways for individuals interested in early childhood administration and the specialized field of family, infant, toddlers (careers in early intervention and home visiting), in addition to our pathway for early childhood teachers. We also have alternative teacher certification in early childhood education for individuals who already have a Bachelor's degree in another field but are working in or interested in working in the field of early childhood.
