The Governor visited the site to show her support for the free tax preparation service, which is run through a partnership between CNM and the United Way of Central New Mexico. New Mexicans with household incomes of $51,000 or less and those age 65 and older are eligible for the service.

She told the audience of taxpayers that Tax Help New Mexico prepared 31,478 returns last year, which resulted in $19 million in refunds. The free service also saved New Mexicans more than $4 million in tax preparation fees.

The tax preparers are volunteers, many of them CNM students who get the opportunity to gain valuable, real-world work experience. All of the volunteers are certified by the Internal Revenue Service to prepare taxes and identify tax credits that taxpayers are entitled to.

govpic5.JPGCNM delivered the training for the volunteers. United Way of Central New Mexico organized the tax preparation sites around the state. There are six sites in Albuquerque, including CNM’s Main Campus, Montoya Campus, South Valley Campus and Westside Campus. The other two sites in Albuquerque are at the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department and at the United Way of Central New Mexico.

Other sites around the state include Bernalillo, Gallup, Clovis, Roswell, Silver City, Jal, Los Lunas, Laguna Pueblo, Santa Fe, Farmington, Carlsbad, Las Vegas, Ramah, Socorro and Zuni. For more information about Tax Help, including all of the locations and hours, click here.
