Westside Campus Hosts Conference on Engaging Learners

June 18, 2014 -- Lori Saxby, president of the national College Reading & Learning Association, will be the keynote speaker at the New Mexico College Reading and Learning Association (NMCRLA) Conference to be held at CNM’s Westside Campus on July 18 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
July 16, 2015

Saxby joined Academic Skills and the University of Southern Indiana in 1999 and currently serves as the reading specialist overseeing the curriculum, supervision and teaching of the developmental reading and college reading strategy courses. An educator for over 35 years, Lori’s experience ranges from teaching pre-school, kindergarten, and elementary school to working in higher education.

She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from the University of Kentucky and a Master of Education degree as a reading specialist from the University of Louisville. A 2008 graduate of the Kellogg Institute, Saxby earned her certification as a developmental education specialist and, in 2010, received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the College Reading and Learning Association.

CNM Instructor Ann Wolf, who is coordinating the conference, expects at least 60 educators to attend from community colleges and universities around the state. The attendees will include instructors who teach developmental education courses, administrators, learning assistance center directors and tutors.

Wolf also coordinated last year’s conference held at UNM. Anybody interested in the topic is encouraged to attend, including students.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Engaging Learners: Texts, Conversations & Communities.” Besides the keynote address, Saxby says there will be six breakout sessions by CNM instructors and others from New Mexico colleges. Topics will include understanding e-textbooks, accelerating math courses and improving learning and memory.

Registration is $60 for the full conference, which includes a continental breakfast and lunch, as well as NMCRLA membership. Students can attend at a discounted rate of $15, which also includes the continental breakfast and lunch. For more information, email annalexawolf@gmail.com or call (505) 861-2142.
