The Name of the Show Was Right on – ‘CNM’s Got Talent’

Dec. 4, 2013 -- They sang; they read poetry; they performed stand-up comedy – all at the college’s first “CNM’s Got Talent” show held Nov. 21 at the Workforce Training Center.

“This was an amazing event that captured a glimpse of CNM’s talent,” said Jeannie Baca, CNM associate dean in Applied Technologies and a production team co-chairperson for CNM’s Got Talent. “The organizing team was truly sensational! We are elated with how it turned out and already have ideas on how to improve if for next year.”

The show was sponsored by CNM’s Leading the Way committee to support student scholarships and promote giving through the Leading the Way campaign. About 100 faculty, staff, friends and family were in attendance supporting contestants.

* First Place -- Ashley Wafford, singer, Follett Bookstore and CNM graduate
* Second Place – Donald McIver, poet, Learning Center Supervisor
* Third Place – Katy Boyles and Company “Pitch Please” barbershop quartet, Marketing & Communications Office, marketing specialist

The winners all took home VISA gift cards and star trophies made by School of Applied Technologies welding students and faculty.

Other contestants were Erica Volkers, poet; Toryn Terrell, singer; Holly Dewees, poet; Sharon Gurule and Hannah Shures, duet; and Mary Broemel, stand-up comedy.

.Judges were Rene Thompson, CNM Chronicle editor; Jim Graebner, film faculty; David Jackson, Hospitality & Tourism faculty; and Joe Damour, Theatre faculty. Co-hosts for the evening were Charnia Parrish and Jessica Kimbrough.

”The judges had a difficult time awarding prizes, as all acts were exceptional and entertaining,” Baca noted.

Making up the production team were Clyde Ortiz, Shelby McCorkle, Amanda Vital, Kathy Duquette, Katy Boyles Daniel Aguilar and Julie Avita. It was chaired by Baca and Marshall Quam. CNM Leading the Way chairs for 2013 are Volkers and Kathy Ulibarri.

Students from the film program staged and filmed the show.

Besides the acts, the night also included pizza, popcorn and door prizes.
