Paula Nellessen: 2015-16 Distinguished Faculty Member Award Winner

Ms. Nellessen goes above and beyond what is expected of a part-time faculty member in the School of Math, Science & Engineering. She routinely holds review sessions for her classes and is very open to adopting new teaching strategies to help students learn.

Ms. Nellessen has taken the lead on bringing a sustainable lab project to the Rio Rancho Campus, which will allow CNM students to study and explore New Mexico’s natural flora while focusing on conservation issues. She is currently working to implement long-term study plots at the Rio Rancho Campus that will serve as a teaching method for students to learn proper field study techniques, as well as allow gathering of short-term and long-term data on the changing environment.

Also, Ms. Nellessen has been a member of the American Society for Microbiology since 1983; she serves as a peer reviewer for a scientific journal; she mentors new part-time biology instructors; and she is a guest lecturer at various Rio Rancho public schools.  Her goal is not only to help students learn the course material, but to help them succeed in all of their classes so they may ultimately reach their educational goals.
