New Welcome Center Provides Convenience for Students

June 3, 2015 -- New and returning students have a new option to access information and receive guidance in a convenient manner when they enter the front door of the Student Services Center on Main Campus, thanks to a new Welcome Center.

“Students need a potpourri of services, ranging from printouts of their course schedules to signing up for parking passes to looking up basic academic information in Banner,” said Jennifer Cornish, multi-campus operations executive director. “In the past this usually meant students had to go to three or four places to get assistance. Now, in many cases, they can make a quick stop at the Welcome Center and get their answers in one location.”

“The goal,” she added “is to provide a welcoming first experience for new students and accurate information to get them on their way.”

Welcome Center staff members are knowledgeable about what services are available at CNM and where they are located.

Cornish came up with the idea of a Welcome Center after attending several conferences where they were a popular topic. She visited Phoenix (Community) College, which is considered to have one of the best welcome centers in the country.

New furniture was ordered for the Welcome Center and a new full-time employee, Hannah Shures, was hired to staff it. Lidia Muniz from Academic Advisement is leading the effort at Main Campus. Also rotating at the center are employees from Financial Aid, Enrollment Services, Assessment and the Contact Center, who will bring their expertise directly to the students. Future plans include the creation of similar centers at other campuses.

Cornish said that the Welcome Center had a “soft opening” the first day of Summer Term, which was a good day to open. “With all the construction going on, students didn’t know where to go. They welcomed the help from the Welcome Center,” she said.
