Employees Honored as Excellence Award Recipients

December 13, 2016 -- Seven CNM employees were honored on Dec. 2 at the Employee Excellence Awards Luncheon. The Employee Excellence Awards recognizes employees for exceptional contributions to the CNM community. Although there are numerous outstanding staff and faculty at CNM, this award honors employees who have demonstrated excellence on the job.

The following is a list of the honorees and what their nominators said about them:

Dorene Ford
School of Health, Wellness & Public Safety
Main Campus

For several years Dorene has developed a continuing education symposium for ultrasound professionals. Ultrasonographers, Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) interns and other health care professionals are able to obtain continuing education points in one day.

Amanda Vital
School of Business & Information Technology
Montoya Campus
For a period of time, I heard -- not from Amanda herself for she is not a show-off -- that Amanda was delivering food to a faculty member who was quite sick. She is a compassionate person who deserves to be recognized by CNM for her loyalty to her colleagues at the Montoya Campus.  While Amanda embodies all the values, she is clearly caring, connected and exceptional.

Maria Nancy Valenzuela
Connect Services
Main Campus
A team of University of New Mexico Health Sciences faculty and staff are working on an initiative to have foreign health professionals integrate in a more expeditious way into the health workforce. Nancy has gone above and beyond with assisting the team in designing a certificate program, organizing a database and connecting directly with the health professionals to make sure they are aware of the classes and programs that they may enroll in. Nancy exemplifies the three CNM focus areas. She is constantly looking for ways to connect, refer and motivate students to promote student success.

Diana Myklebust
Dean of Students
Main Campus

Diana has been supporting and attending the mobile food pantry that is sponsored by the Military and Veterans Charter on the fourth Saturday of each month. She has also been a valuable part of the Sky Scholars project, which is a partnership with the Sky Warriors, New Mexico Advocacy Network and the Dean of Students Office to mentor the youth who have aged out of the Foster Care system. She is currently mentoring girls from New Mexico Child Advocacy Networks (NMCAN), along with teaching them ballooning. She is an great example of CNM's Vision of “Changing Lives, Building Community” with the outreach to these populations at CNM.

Cruz Ortega
Financial Aid
Main Campus

Cruz is the lead technician in the customer service area at Financial Aid. He has not only done his duties exceptionally well, he has taken this position to another level all together. He goes out to high school events in the evening with an advisor to help and speak to our Latino community. He does this because he strives for exceptional service in his performance and others.  His work ethic and actions support the following CNM core values: he is caring, he is inspiring, he is connected and he is exceptional.

Reina Martinez
Main Campus
Reina did a wonderful job in rolling out CNM’s new Electronic P-Card reconciliation process. This was a major undertaking above and beyond her normal duties. She is always very patient and understanding of issues that arise and goes out of her way to help solve the problem and ensure that her customers are taken care of. Reina worked many hours outside of her regular work schedule to sit down one-on-one with P-Card holders to ensure that they understood the new process and how to use the new tools. Reina is an excellent advocate for changing lives and building community.

Karen Hughes
Human Resources
Main Campus
As the college’s primary human resources benefits specialist, Karen consistently provides personal support to employees experiencing difficulties. One that immediately comes to mind: advocating with New Mexico Public School Insurance Authority (NMPSIA) for an employee who needed immediate coverage for herself and her children upon the sudden death of the employee’s spouse. Another time, she worked with a mother getting insurance for herself and her newborn and helping the family work through hurdles and deadlines with NMPSIA. What is exceptional about her routine advocacy and incredible work on behalf of her fellow employees is her tireless patience with employees. She supports the goals of organizational excellence.
